(b) Double bar graph

(c) Divided bar graph

We will illustrate each of these graphs by the following illustrations:

In pictograph, we use pictures to represent data. For example the picture symbols such as represent different numbers. This way of representing numerical data is time consuming and it is difficult to compare two items.In these conditions bar graphs play an important role.

Bar graphs are often used to show nominal or categorical data. Nominal or categorical data have no order, and the assignment of numbers to categories is purely arbitrary. These categories must be clearly explained in the legend.

The following are examples of bar graphs. A single bar graph shows data on a particular variable for a single group. A multiple bar graph provides data on a particular variable for more than one group.

Note:

1. All bars have the same thickness.

2. Distance between two consecutive bars is the same. The bars can touch each other.

3. The height of each bar represents the frequency number of students.

4. The thickness has no significance.

5. Bar graphs are preferred when each item of data is separate from the other.

Note: Double bar or divided bar graph is preferred when we want to compare two sets of related data.
